Stress is a normal physical response to events that make you feel threatened or upset your balance in some way. If not addressed and taken care of properly can lead to behavioral, emotional, physical, and cognitive health implications. According to the Gallop Orginization, 26% of all Americans fear that they’ll lose their jobs in the coming year, 26% fear that they will have their wages or their hours cut, and 36% fear that their benefits will be cut.

Those are a lot of worries employees are taking on, so the question is, can corporations help eliminate some of these stresses? Good news, they can, and many of them currently do have different programs to help cope with everyday stresses. Some examples of offerings are in-house wellness centers, so workers can have consultations with medical professionals to monitor their stress issues and work on them. These wellness centers also offer massages, and yoga classes to help reduce some of these pressures employees are facing.

Companies like American Online, Google, Apple, Ford, and Monsanto are using mediation in the workplace. This method will improve worker productivity by helping their workforce reduce stress by taking a time out for themselves. The way they do this is to gather a group of employees for 25 minutes, shut off all the lights and focus on the prompt provided such as breathing. Overall, doing this will have workers feeling more centered and able to deal with their stress. All of these approaches used, are meant to help employees deal with their issues and reduce tension without increasing human resource costs. A happy workforce only leads to higher productivity and less costs to companies, overcoming stress is a win-win situation for everyone!
